Dark-field optical microspectroscopy was used to detect changes in the individual nanoparticle LSPR scattering spectrum upon resonant laser illumination . The measured LSPR spectrum in air was found to peak at 563 nm. When the microchamber was filled with DI water with a temperature of 20 ¡ãC, the LSPR was observed to redshift to 598 nm. The redshift of 35 nm is in good agreement with the redshift obtained from a Mie calculation for the same particle embedded in air compared with that in water at 20 ¡ãC (¦Å = 1.778). During laser illumination while the nanoparticle was surrounded by water, however, the LSPR was observed to blueshift to 581 nm.The observed shift implies a decreased refractive index of the medium directly surrounding the nanoparticle, which we interpret as resulting from a water vapor envelope surrounding the nanoparticle.
