I think hemicellulose can be dissolved in strong alkaline solvents, such as sodium hydroxide aqueous solvent. I didn't do any experiments to prove that, however, I did read some literature reporting that cellulose can be purified from pulps by dissolving them in sodium hydroxide solvent, to further remove the hemicellulose segments in the pulps. Hereby, wood cellulose can just be swollen in sodium hydroxide, while hemicellulose can be dissolved.
