The Apple of Ones' Eye



"the apple of one's eye"这个表达法早在公元885年，
艾尔弗雷德大帝（King Alfred (the Great) of Wessex）用古英语写就的文章Gregory's Pastoral Care中就出现了。
古英语原文：
hwæt on eæs siwenigean eagum beoe ea æpplas hale, ac ea bræwas greatigae,
foream hie beoe oft drygde for eæm tearum ee eær gelome of flowae,
oeeæt sio scearpnes bie gewird eæs æpples.

The pupils of the bleared eyes are sound, but the eyelashes become bushy,
being often dried because of the frequent flow of tears,
until the sharpness of the pupil is dulled.




"the apple of one's eye"在《钦定版圣经》(King James Version,1611) 年中也多次出现：

《申命记》( Deuteronomy ,32:10)   
[He found him in a desert land, and in the waste howling wilderness;
he led him about, he instructed him, he kept him as the apple of his eye.]
[耶和华遇见他在旷野、荒凉野兽吼叫之地，
就环绕他、看顾他，保护他，如同保护眼珠的瞳人（仁）。]

《诗篇》（The Book of Psalms 17:8）
[Keep me as the apple of thy eye,
hide me under the shadow of thy wings]
[求你保护我，如同保护眼珠的瞳人（仁），
将我隐藏在你翅膀的荫下]

《箴言》（Proverbs 7:2）
[Keep my commandments, and live;
and my law as the apple of thine eye.]
[谨守我的诫命，就得存活；
谨守我的律法，慎如保护眼珠的瞳人（仁）。]

《耶利米哀歌》（Lamentations 2:18）
[Their heart cried unto the Lord, O wall of the daughter of Zion,
let tears run down like a river day and night: give thyself no rest; let not the apple of thine eye cease.]
[锡安的城墙啊，众人从心里呼求耶和华了。
你的眼泪要像江河日夜涌流。愿你眼珠的瞳人（仁），泪流不止。]

《撒迦利亚》（Zechariah 2:8）
[For thus saith the LORD of hosts; After the glory hath he sent me unto the nations which spoiled you:
for he that toucheth you toucheth the apple of his eye.]
[万军之主耶和华说：“上帝得到荣耀之后，就差我去惩治那些抢掠你们的列国，
因为触摸你们的，就是触摸祂眼珠的瞳人（仁）。”]




在现代英语中"the apple of one's eye"最早出现于英国小说家Walter Scott（沃尔特·司各特）
的作品《修墓老人》（亦译作《清教徒》）
（Sir Walter Scott's Old Mortality, 1816）中：
"Poor Richard was to me as an eldest son, the apple of my eye."




The Apple of Ones' Eye的字面意思是“某人眼里的苹果”，

在这里，apple实际指的是the pupil（眼珠中心的瞳孔），
大概因为眼珠圆的象苹果之故。

瞳孔是眼睛最重要的部分，失去瞳孔，光线就无法通过虹膜中心的圆孔进入眼内而变成了盲人。

所以，这个成语典故常用来比喻象爱护眼珠一样爱护某个最心爱的人或珍贵的东西，

即表示 a cherished person or object;
sth extrmely precious to one;
sb dearly loved等意。

成语典故the apple of one's eye是固定结构，不得写成the apple of the eye of…的形式；
在搭配上，它常与动词be，keep，care for等连用。

按其想象意义，它与汉语成语“掌上明珠”颇相似，但其比喻的对象较汉语“掌珠”更广，
因“掌珠”通常指心爱的女儿，而不能用与其他场合。
eg:
Little Mary is the apple of her father's eye
Mind the reputation of your school as you care for the apple of your eye.
