【weekly topic】To dismantle or not dismantle

We are experiencing a rapid urbanization now. The cities are expanding their boundaries to all directions, north, south, east, west, upward, downward. More and more villages are caught into the arms of city. These villages become into village-in-city. What’s the fate of such urban villages? I don’t know much about such village. At first sight, the buildings in these villages are not beautiful, some are short, some are tall, but everyone has a similar shape, without little element in their design, they are only built for use, so all the decorations are left out, in order to reduce the cost. Do these houses have pipe line systems for sewage, tap water and gas? I don’t know. Perhaps conditions may be different in different cities. The lanes in these villages are very narrow, compared with the wide street in the cities. House rent in these villages are low, they become very good homes for newly graduated students and for farmers who come to work in cities. Often, the building in such villages are not tall, but in one such villages in our city, building are all about 8-10 stories tall, compared with 4-5 in other villages. In order to make the city beautiful, all the villages are being dismantled now. It is easy to dismantle such villages. Only about 20 days are needed to pull down such a village. Then taller, more beautiful buildings will be build at the sites of these villages. It seems who pay for it is not important. But, obviously, dismantling such buildings is a waste. A couple of years ago, a 28-story building beside the West Lake in Hangzhou was dismantled. Compared with such a building, buildings in urban villages can only be regarded as nothing. But, they are buildings, they are built with cement, brick, steel, workers got paid for their building process. Although they are shabby, they are not beautiful, they can still be used. It is said that the life of a building in China is 70 years. But, too often, many buildings are pulled down in their childhood. A question is, do such building have to be pulled down? What’s your opinion? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() [ Last edited by curton on 2012-9-20 at 23:17 ] |
