The Department of Isotope Biogeochemistry at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research GmbH - UFZ is offering a position for three years within the 2nd phase of the DFG Priority Program 1319 (Biological Transformations without Oxygen: From the Molecular to the Global Scale) for a PhD student (m/f) working on the sub-project: ¡®Characterization of the biochemistry and physiology of hydrocarbon degradation pathways by stable isotope approaches¡± Objectives The main objective of this project is to elucidate the isotope fractionation pattern upon the initial step of anaerobic degradation pathways of selected hydrocarbons. The biochemical reaction mechanism of the cleavage of a carbon-hydrogen bond will be characterized using hydrogen and carbon isotope fractionation. The isotope fractionation pattern will be compared with molecular biological and biochemical data. Model compounds are substituted or non-substituted (poly)aromatic hydrocarbons. A second topic is to elucidate the mechanism of benzene activation under anoxic conditions, and to resolve syntrophic processes in a benzene-degrading enrichment culture by stable-isotope based approaches. We will cooperate with several partners of the SPP 1319 in an interdisciplinary international network. We seek a highly motivated, creative person with a strong background in microbiology and (bio)chemistry. Candidates should have a master (or equivalent) degree in the area of natural sciences, preferentially (micro)biology or (bio)chemistry. Excellent English communication skills are expected. We provide excellent supervision in an international team. The place of work is Leipzig, Germany. Salary will be according to the appropriate civil service level TVÖD (13/2). Funding is available for 36 months. The successful candidate will work in a highly interdisciplinary research environment with excellently equipped facilities.
