With a staff of 5000, Forschungszentrum Jülich – a member of the Helmholtz Association – is one of the largest interdisciplinary research centres in Europe and stands for the next generation of key technologies. Work with us on the grand challenges in the fields of health, energy & environment, and information technology, as well as on the many and varied tasks of research management. For the research group in computational modeling of materials for nuclear waste management at our Institute for Energy and Climate Research – Nuclear Waste Management and Reactor Safety (IEK-6) we are currently seeking two PhD Students in computational modelling of materials for nuclear waste management: chemistry of actinides Tasks: The successful candidate will join the newly established young investigators research modelling group in the Nuclear Waste Management and Reactor Safety part of the Institute for Energy and Climate Research (IEK-6: http://www.fz-juelich.de/iek/iek-6/DE/home/_node.html) at Forschungszentrum Juelich (www.fz-juelich.de). The research topics are material science oriented and will focus on understanding of materials relevant to the safe management of high level nuclear waste (solid state chemistry of actinides). The computational work will focus on development and application of multi-scale modelling techniques, including ab initio methods, to modelling of actinides-bearing materials. The work and studies will be performed in a highly interdisciplinary and international research environment and in close collaboration with the experimental research ongoing in the institute. Requirements: We are seeking bright, highly motivated and enthusiastic candidates for Ph. D. studies who are able to work in an interdisciplinary, international and collaborative research team. Candidates shall have a MSc (or equivalent) in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, Computational Science, Geoscience, Mineralogy or related disciplines. Previous experience with computational physics and chemistry software and techniques, programming and high performance computing will be an advantage. A good level in English and/or German is required. Supervisors: Dr. Piotr Kowalski (Group Leader) and Prof. Dr. Dirk Bosbach (Institute Director) Conditions: We offer a three year doctorate programme including salary and social benefits conforming to the provisions of the Collective Agreement for the German Civil Service (TVöD). Doctoral degrees are conferred by one of Jülich’s partner universities located in North Rhine-Westphalia (such as RWTH Aachen University or University of Cologne). Furthermore, the PhD students will be involved in Helmholtz Interdisciplinary Doctoral Training in Energy and Climate (HITEC, http://www.fz-juelich.de/portal/ ... e/hitec/_node.html), which focuses on providing the PhD students with the expertise and the methodological and communication skills necessary for scientific work on the highest international level, making the graduates very attractive to the employers. Place of work: The Forschungszentrum Juelich is one of the largest multidisciplinary research centres in Europe. It belongs to the Helmholtz association of the German research centres (www.helmholtz.de/en/about_us/) that perform topclass research in strategic programmes in six core fields: Energy, Earth and Environment, Health, Key Technologies, Structure of Matter, Aeronautics, Space and Transport. Forschungszentrum Juelich operates one of the most powerful computer systems, which will be available for successful applicants to conduct the planned research. Juelich is located in the centre of Europe with an easy access to many major German and European Cities (Aachen, Cologne, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Brussels, Paris, ...), which gives young researchers excellent opportunities to enhance their professional and personal life. How to apply: The positions will be filled as soon as proper candidates are found. The first evaluation of the applications is planned for July 30th 2012. Applications should include a scientific CV, the contact information (including emails) of at least two references and the transcripts of studies. Inquiries and applications should be sent to Dr. Piotr Kowalski, email: kowalski@gfz-potsdam.de. Forschungszentrum Jülich is an equal opportunities employer. Therefore, we particularly welcome applications from women and disabled persons. |
