2nd IGBP PAGES Focus IV LIMPACS ¡®Salinity, Climate Change & Salinisation¡¯ Working Group Workshop 11-14 April, 2007, Nanjing, China The second workshop of the ¡®Salinity, Climate Change and Salinisation¡¯ working group will be held in Nanjing, from 11-14 April, 2007. To complement the strong human impact theme of the workshop at Mildura in October, 2004, this meeting focus more closely on the use of salt lakes to disentangle externally driven climate change and anthropogenically induced change through the integration of palaeolimnological, modelling and monitoring approaches. The emphasis will include contrasting the records of closed lake systems that principally reflect climate changes with those that responded to a mixture of human-induced catchment change and climate forcing. As a means of integrating the experiences of the international participants, the intended outcome of the meeting will be the publication of a key multi-authored, paper reviewing the evidence for the degree to which human activities have affected climate impacts and natural limnological variability of the world¡¯s saline lakes and their catchments over the last two millennia. It will be written to submit to JOPL, Palaeo3 or The Holocene. This will be achieved through workshops that: • identify key saline lake research sites • evaluate the quality of the records of change, • evaluate the capacity of inferring the cause of change by integrating available monitoring and modelling approaches • disentangle the relative influence of natural climate variability, human induced climate change and human driven catchment change using quantitative and/or qualitative means. A by-product of this approach will be to identify gaps in knowledge to the pursuit of the broader questions of climatic variability in semi-arid and arid regions and quantification of the role of people in lake ecosystem change. A workshop session will be dedicated to initiating collaborative grant proposals directed specifically to the identified gaps in knowledge.
