The classification made by Balluffi and Sutton has proved to be particu-larly useful in describing interfaces. According to their definition,interfaces consist of three types: singular, vicinal and general. A singular interface is ¡®¡®an interface, the free energy of which is at a local minimum with respect to at least one macroscopic geometrical degree of freedom¡¯¡¯; a vicinal interface is ¡®¡®an interface, the free energy of which is near a local minimum with respect to at least one of the macroscopic geometrical degrees of freedom¡¯¡¯; a general interface is ¡®¡®an interface, the free energy of which is at, or near, a local maximum with respect to one or more macroscopic geometrical degrees of freedom¡¯¡¯.
