Facile one-pot synthesis of near-infrared luminescent gold nanoparticles for sensing
copper (II)                                            Nanotechnology 22 (2011) 095701

In a typical synthesis, 1 M of Au3+ aqueous stock solution was prepared by dissolving an appropriate amount of HAuCl4¡¤4H2OinH2O. 30 µl of the HAuCl4 stock solution was added to 10 ml of 2.4 mM GSH solution under vigorous stirring. The mixture was heated at 90 ◦
C for 35 min. The resulting yellow solutionswere filtered through a 0.22 µm filter membrane, and then purified by passing through the membrane of a 50 kDa MWCO centrifuge filter (Millipore) and collected by a 10 kDa MWCO centrifuge filter (Millipore) after several runs of the dilution and concentration cycles. This as-prepared NIRL-AuNPs were stored at 4 ◦ C for further use.

Maybe you can try to adjust the pH before heating. A high pH is always favorable for Au reduction. The same group also reported a similar work in Chem. Commun., 2009, 1736¨C1738.
