For a number of reasons, nitrogen (at 77 K) is generally considered to be the most suitable adsorptive for the determination of the surface area of non-porous, macroporous or mesoporous solids.
Since the nitrogen¨Csurface interactions are dependent on the adsorbent structure, some variation in Am is to be expected.
it is not easy to obtain completely independent verification of BET nitrogen areas.
Argon may seem to be an alternative adsorptive for surface area determination.
An alternative is argon adsorption at 87 K, i.e. at liquid argon temperature.
A cross-sectional area, AAr, of 0.142 nm2 is usually assumed.
For operational reasons, it becomes difficult to measure the adsorption of nitrogen if the specific surface area is relatively low (i.e. if As < 2 m2 g-1).
In this event, krypton adsorption at 77 K can be used to minimize the dead space correction and hence improve the accuracy in measuring the small amounts adsorbed.
