>1. The authors need to reference recent work by Adame on constrained polymer effects.
>2. The authors also need to look at work on ion-dipole interactions with clay by Goss etal.
>3. The x-ray diffraction patterns have been misinterpreted both systems are intercalated.
>4. The TEM pictures also show an intercalated system not exfoliated.
>5. The intercalate in the above the isoelectric point are interacting through ion-dipole bonding and below via electrostatic.

>This is a carefully written paper on a topic of interest to the readers of Biomacromolecules and is suitable for publication with only minor changes.

>-The intensity in the cross polarization spectrum is not always quantitative.  The authors should justify their use of this approach.
>-MMT is paramagnetic.  How does this affect the results?  Could this affect the quantitative relationship in signal intensity for those signals nearest the clay?
>-Silk is renown for its mechanical properties.  The authors may wish to comment on the possibility of using the clay-silk interactions to prepare films or fibers for mechanical testing.  This is probably not possible with the lyophilized material as prepared here.
