Novel MOF Membranes for Gas Separation

Capturing CO₂ from waste gas streams in large-scale industrial processes is essential for achieving net-zero carbon emissions and mitigating the climate crisis. However, CO₂ separation remains an energy-intensive challenge in the transition to a low-carbon economy.

Membrane technology offers a promising solution for reducing CO₂ emissions. Compared to conventional distillation processes, membrane-based separation has several advantages, including lower energy consumption, a smaller environmental footprint, reduced capital costs, and operational simplicity. Among membrane materials, metal-organic framework (MOF) material stands out due to their structural flexibility, tunable pore sizes, functional versatility, high pore volumes, and large surface areas.

In recent years, Dr. Ben Yin and his collaborators in New Zealand have collaboratively developed novel MOF materials with exceptional gas adsorption selectivity, low production costs, and ease of preparation. These features make them ideal candidates for polycrystalline and mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs). This project focuses on the design, synthesis, and development of membranes using these MOF materials.

PhD Opportunities

PhD positions are available in the Department of Chemical and Process Engineering at the University of Canterbury [1, 2]. Successful candidates will work under the supervision of Dr. Ben Yin and collaborate with partner investigators from the universities in New Zealand and internationally.
This research offers the opportunity to develop multidisciplinary expertise in MOF chemistry, membrane technology, and separation engineering - key areas driving the advancement of low-carbon technologies.

Eligibility

Applicants should hold a master's degree in chemical engineering, chemistry, or materials engineering with strong academic performance (GPA > 3.6/4). Alternatively, candidates with a four-year (Honours) degree with first-class Honours are eligible.
We seek highly motivated individuals with a strong academic record, practical laboratory skills, and the ability to work well in a team. A research background in gas separation membranes and MOFs is preferred.
Candidates must meet the University of Canterbury's PhD admission requirements, including English language proficiency [3].

Funding & Scholarships

Ready-to-go scholarships are available for outstanding candidates. Applicants may also be required to apply for a UC Doctoral Scholarship [4]. Chinese students are encouraged to apply for UC-CSC scholarships [5].
The university scholarship provides a stipend of NZD 32,000 per annum for three years. The CSC scholarship offers a stipend of NZD 2,100 per month for four years, along with return flight tickets and health insurance, Both cover payment of all university tuition fees.

Supervisor Information

Dr. Ben Yin earned his bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering from Dalian University of Technology, China, in 2008. He began his research career at the National University of Singapore and completed his Ph.D. in Chemical and Process Engineering at the University of Canterbury in 2016.
He then held a postdoctoral fellowship at the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) in Saudi Arabia, focusing on membrane technology for seawater desalination. Upon returning to New Zealand, he secured independent postdoctoral funding from the MacDiarmid Institute and conducted research at Massey University and Victoria University of Wellington for eight years.
Currently, Dr. Yin is a Senior Lecturer and leads the Advanced Membrane Technology Group in the Department of Chemical and Process Engineering at the University of Canterbury. His research focuses on developing advanced membrane technologies for gas separation and water treatment applications.
