one ph.d. position supported by ra is immediately available in department of mechanical & aerospace engineering at university of missouri- columbia for fall/2019 (deadline: 05/31/2019). excellent candidates could be supported by fellowship. interested areas is: computational materials,machine learning in materials/manufacturing. we are looking for students with the following backgrounds: • applicants with master degree are preferred, although excellent ones with b.s. are also considered. • applicants should have b.s. or m.s. degree majored in physics, applied physics, physical chemistry, materials science, chemical engineering, mechanics, or mechanical engineering. • applicants should have research experience in computational science, statistics analysis with strong programming skills using matlab and/or python. the ones with experience in machine learning are highly desired. • minimum gpa: 3.5 • toefl or ielts and gre are required. minimum of toefl is 80 (ibt) or 550 (pbt); ielts is 6.5. the gre is 298 (verbal plus quantitative). application information • application deadline: summer/2019 (04/30/2019), or fall/2019 (deadline: 05/31/2019) • mae graduate application information (click here). interested applicants should send a single pdf file including curriculum vitae to dr. lin at javen.lin0109@gmail.com or linjian@missouri.edu. about the research group: our group is quite multidisciplinary, focusing research in artificial intelligence powered materials development from design, processing to applications. the team is led by dr. jian lin, who got b.s. from zhejiang university in 2007. he then obtained his m.s. in electrical engineering and ph.d. in mechanical engineering from university of california-riverside in 2010 and 2011, respectively. prior to mu, he was a post-doctoral researcher at rice university from 2011 to 2014. he is currently an assistant professor in mechanical engineering and an adjunct assistant professor in electrical engineering and computer science (eecs). dr. lin has published >50 peer-reviewed journal papers in the areas of experimental and computational materials, and holds 5 issued international patents. some of his research was featured in national science foundation (nsf), air force research lab (afrl), american chemical society (acs), chemical & engineering news (c&en), and science daily. he is a recipient of 2015 orau ralph powe junior faculty enhancement award and 2016 emerging investigator of the journal of materials chemistry. his research is currently funded by u.s. department of energy, national science foundation, and u.s. department of agriculture. for the more detailed information, please refer to website: https://engineers.missouri.edu/linj/ about the mu: the university of missouri-columbia (mu) is the flagship campus of the university of missouri system and was established in 1839 as the first public university west of the mississippi river. mu is one of the nation's top-tier r1 institutions by us news and a ru/vh (research university with very high research activity) by carnegie foundation. it is a member of the association of american universities (aau), composed of 62 leading universities in the north america. the university of missouri research reactor center is the world's most powerful university research reactor. mu is one of only six public universities in the us with medicine, veterinary medicine, and law all on one campus. it is located in columbia, which has consistently been ranked by money magazine as one of the nation's top places to live because of its excellent quality of life. it is 2 hour-drive to saint louis and kansas cities which are metropolitan areas. career pathway for students: the student will be co-supervised by a professor from computer science. it is encouraged for the student to take courses toward a m.s. degree in statistics. after graduation, the student could possibly land on a position in academic or land a position in consulting/financial industry, software companies. |
