The number of adherent cells to the granules of GAC was evaluated as described below. GAC granules (1 g) with the immobilized bacteria were washed three times with sterile Milli Q water and then resuspended in Tris–HCl 0.01 M pH 7.0 containing 0.01% Tween 80 (Sigma) and 0.1% Peptone (Sigma). The suspensions were then incubated for 10 min under constant stirring at room temperature.
