The number of adherent cells to the granules of GAC was evaluated
as described below.
GAC granules (1 g) with the immobilized bacteria were washed
three times with sterile Milli Q water and then resuspended in
Tris–HCl 0.01 M pH 7.0 containing 0.01% Tween 80 (Sigma) and 0.1%
Peptone (Sigma). The suspensions were then incubated for 10 min
under constant stirring at room temperature. To measure the fraction
of viable cells, the suspensions were then serially diluted in
PBS 1X and plated onto TY agar plates.
