Referee: 2 COMMENTS TO THE AUTHOR(S) The submitted manuscript focuses on investigation of damage evolution in coal and rock samples due to heating using acoustic emission technique. Multifractal analysis of AE energy signals subsets allowed authors to detect critical temperatures corresponding sharp changes in damage accumulation. Based on analysis of D-T curves there were obtained three stages of damage accumulation with different laws of damage-temperature relation. A few comments need to be addressed: 1. The section of experimental equipment and methodology is very brief. Concerning acoustic emission acquisition, it is not clear, continuous or discrete acoustic emission is registered? What is the value of a discrimination threshold? Nothing is told about heating regime. In what way the uniform heating of the lower end face is implemented? What is a heating rate? What is a heat conductivity of used rocks and how lot of time is required for the uniform heating of specimen volume? What indicates lack of a time delay of AE activity of heating and allows authors to collate times of AE changes with the §ãurrent temperature? 2. It is said that the main mechanism of deformation and damage on the first and second stages is nonuniform thermal expansion of mineral grains, but there is no estimation of strain caused by a thermal expansion at low temperature (up to 120 degrees). Maybe this strain is less than a strain of a collapse of primary pores and cracks during uniaxial compression. What about porosity of coal and rock samples? |
