In this study, English learning ecosystem of Chinese college students was taken as an example to find out the effects of energy flow on an artificial ecosystem. First, the model of English learning ecosystem of Chinese college students was established to understand the composition of three trophic levels and path of energy flow in the system. Second, in this model, a nutrient cycling structure - ecological pyramid was adopted to analyze energy distribution among the three trophic levels. Finally, a survey was conducted among undergraduate students from a university in China which reveals that college students believe their English learning at trophic level one-language input skills and language knowledge occupies first place, trophic level two-language output skills comes second and trophic level three-practical use of English is the worst. The results show that the deviation of energy distribution from ecological pyramid is a major reason for the inefficiency of college English teaching. Therefore, the distribution of energy among different trophic levels of an artificial ecosystem should adhere to energy pyramid. The survey shows that results of this study are consistent with actual situations. The survey results demonstrate the promising application of the proposed model of English teaching ecosystem in improving teaching efficiency, which is also applicable to optimizing other artificial ecosystems.
