When the glass was heat treated, metal nanoparticles less than 5 nm in diameters were formed, which had apparent surface plasmon resonance effect. In the process, the nanoparticles further evolved into nanoclusters (or nano-aggregates), probably due to the small sizes of nanoparticles, which provides an opportunity to study the influence of metal nanoclusters on light emission from rare earth ions, such as how do the occurrence and distribution of these metal nanoclusters in glass affect the extend of surface plasmon resonance effect and light emission.
