Thank you for your interest in studying for a PhD in Sociology at Trinity College Dublin. I read your CV with great interest and see that, like me, you have an interest in medical sociology and processes of ageing. Was there a particular issue in that area that you had an interest in? One of my current interests is the way in which previous experience in the life course influences health at older age and the implications that this has for different life course models. I have been studying these issues using the TILDA cohort study (see http://tilda.tcd.ie/) as well as child cohort studies. I am also very interested In the role of social context as a determinant of health. For example, does the health care system contribute to better ageing through the provision of health care services and if so, does this vary both within countries and across different systems (i.e. across countries)? See:

Layte, R., O’Hara, S. and Bennett, K. (2010). Explaining structural change in cardiovascular mortality in Ireland 1995–2005: a time series analysis, European Journal of Public Health, Vol.21(5), 597-602.

Do neighbourhoods with more social interaction between lead to better outcomes and if so, why? See:

McCrory, C., , Finucane, C., O’Hare, Frewen, J., Nolan, H., Layte, R., Kearney, P. and Kenny, R.A (forthcoming) Social disadvantage and social isolation are associated with a higher resting heart rate: evidence from The Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing (TILDA), Journal of Gerontology: Psychological Sciences.

Had you thought about the possibility of using Chinese cohort data to look at these and other others of interest? It may even be possible to carry out comparative analysis between China and Ireland (and other countries). My colleague in the Dept. of Medical Gerontology here in TCD, Yuanyuan Ma uses Chinese data from the CHARLS Cohort based in Beijing. You may want to consider contacting her to investigate possible use of this data for a PhD. Her email is: mayu@tcd.ie

The standard process for applying for a PhD is for you to send me a proposal for a possible PhD project, or an area for a study. If I feel I can supervise this project I will ask you to submit a full application through the TCD website. The final stage is an interview either here in the Dept. or over the internet.

If you have any questions do not hesitate to come back to me.
