Dubsmash is a new mobile app that lets you record a video ofyourself, synced to a preselected sound clip, such as a well-known quote from a movie or a popular song, and then share the video on the social media. When Dubsmash founders, Jonas Dr¨¹ppel, Roland Grenke and Daniel Taschik, created the app, they had an inkling they were on to something. But, after failing to conquer the iOS app storetwice before, they couldn¡¯t have known for certain that they had a smash hit on their hands. However, just seven days after officially launching on November 19th 2014, they¡¯d reached thenumber one spot in their home country of Germany. A success that would soon be replicated in29 countries, including the UK, France and Holland. There¡¯s obvious potential copyright issues inherent in Dubsmash, since the majority of uploadedsounds are from unlicensed content, namely TV and film sound clips. Thus far, however, this hasn¡¯t been a problem, says Grenke. Should that change, the startup plansto work within a ¡®take-down notice¡¯ model when a license holder complains. |
