| This paper reports the preparation and study of an inorganic precursor membrane with a NaA zeolite composition and its subsequent hydrothermal transformation to form a self-supporting NaA zeolite membrane. The majority of the geopolymer gel was converted into the zeolite phase after the hydrothermal process was applied, whereas a small quantity of non-converted material inside the membrane continued to provide strength and buttressing support to the zeolite membrane. The volume of the micropores of the geopolymer changed from 0 to 0.049 cc/g after the hydrothermal process. The self-supporting NaA zeolite membranes may be potential used in organic solvent dehydration processes or seawater desalination because these membranes possess high compressive strength (approximately 57 MPa) and good ion % rejection (approximately 99.5% at a water flux of 0.42 kg m-2 h-1 and a work temperature of 25ºC). |
