Dr. Cassian Yee's research office has received an extraordinary number of calls and e-mails as a result of extensive media coverage of his paper about T-cell therapy for advanced melanoma, which appeared in the June 19 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine. His staff is doing its best to respond to as many inquiries as possible. We are only treating patients with melanoma and it can take 4 to 5 months to grow the T cells before they can be infused. We regret that this has been disappointing to most people asking about the trial. More studies — including a much larger clinical trial — will be required to validate the findings reported in June, which were based on a single patient. Dr. Yee currently has two similar, small clinical trials under way for patients with advanced melanoma. Eligibility to participate in these trials is very strict as there are many criteria for enrollment; some of these include no brain metastasis, no other form of cancer, good performance status (can perform normal daily activities) and no other serious illnesses. We do not generally enroll patients outside of the Seattle area because close follow up is required and because the time and expense required of patients to remain in the Seattle area can pose undue hardships on patients who are away from their friends and family.
