The possibility of producing ethanol from ethylene and water in a gas phase reaction is to be investigated, and you have been asked to comment on the thermodynamics of the reaction:
C2H4(g) + H2O(g) = C2H5OH(g)
It is believed that in order to obtain reasonable reaction rates that the reaction will have to be carried out at a minimum temperature of 500 oF; however, we wish to limit the upper temperature to 1000 oF.  Someone has suggested that carrying out the reaction at high pressure might be desirable.  It is felt, though that 10 atm should be the upper limit.  It will be easy to separate unreacted ethylene from ethanol for recycle, and a conversion of 10%  would justify a plant study.  Under these constraints, would the maximum obtainable conversion exceed 10%.  Use some skills from a prior class to make a three dimensional plot of the conversion as a function of both T and P in the ranges of interest. Assume equimolar mixture with 1 mole total in for that reaction.
