Heavy metals of market vegetables are investigated in Chongqing city, one of the largest municipalities directly under the jurisdiction of central government of China. Some chronically consumed vegetables from markets in Chongqing were contaminated with lead and cadmium according to the heavy metal sanitary standards for edible vegetables established by China and FAO/WHO. The evaluation of daily intake and target hazard quotient indicated that local people of the Chongqing city proper was subject to hazardous exposure to some heavy metals through consumption of four selected vegetables including cos lettuce,pakchoi, cabbage and mustard over a lifetime, suggesting that the current consumption of these four vegetables should be banned or reduced. |
