Egypt is also the home of some of the best peridot, the gem variety of forsterite. Again, these are ancient workings, and, historically, there is no telling how large some of the crystals may have been. However, there is a 311.78-carat stone in the Smithsonian Institution. It was found on an island in the Red Sea that is currently called Zabargad (Arabic for peridot) but was previously known as Saint John's Island. Before the recent finds in Pakistan, this locality was the only peridot locality to produce good large crystals. The color of this material from Zabargad is considered very good for the species. The island is rumored now to be a target for the Egyptian navy to practice shelling, but an interesting account of a visit there in 1980 by Peter Bancroft and Eduard Gübelin is contained in Bancroft (1984).
