As the interest in macroscopic phenomena in liquid crystals and their applications in displays and devices becomes increasingly widespread, there is a growing demand for a rigorous yet accessible text suitable for graduate students, whatever their scientific background. This book satisfies that need. This text introduces the basic continuum theory, mathematics, and simple applications for liquid crystals, starting with the discussion of nematic liquid crystals in equilibria, classic static theory, boundary conditions, and equilibrium equations. The author describes electrical and magnetic field effects and the development of switching in liquid crystal displays, Freedericksz transitions, backflow and kickback phenomena, tilted fields, and classic Frank defects. The dynamics of nematic liquid crystals are resolved with derivations of the Ericksen-Leslie equations, detailed accounts of applications, a summary of dynamic equations, key concepts of nematic viscosities, and various flow alignments, effects, and problems. While liquid crystals are anisotropic materials, oscillatory shear flow, Couette flow, and Poiseuille flow are compared with isotropic fluids. The author also covers light scattering and the dynamics of smectic C and ferroelectric liquid crystals. A number of mathematical techniques and some experimental data are presented in the appendices. As the first of its kind to provide full derivations of the mathematical calculations, The Static and Dynamic Continuum Theory of Liquid Crystals is a suitable introductory text for students and researchers in applied mathematics, theoretical physics, and engineering interested in the field of liquid crystal continuum theory.

Summary: Well-Organized Fills in Derivational Steps
Rating: 5

I feel compelled to write a review for this book because it is one of the few well-organized books on liquid crystal continuum theory that fills in derivational steps. I have read Chandrasekhar, Collings & Hird, de Gennes & Prost for theory, as well as the applications texts by Yeh & Gu, Lueder, Yang & Wu, and Chigrinov. While Nobelist de Gennes & Prost is certainly the deepest and most sophisticated book on theory, by themselves the insights are worthwhile, but there are a lot of assumed knowledge and jumps in derivation which makes the text difficult for a non-theorist in the field to follow. Chandrasekhar is erudite but also has jumps to conclusions with little explanation. The others are lightweight in theory and generally appear to be hastily written (no doubt to cash in on the LCD market explosion).

Stewart, on the other hand, is erudite but at the same time gives logical explanations of the derivations, filling in many of the details that others have left out. Now, I can guess that workers in liquid crystal theory might be able to handily follow Chandrasekhar and the others, it is still satisfying to find a book that really goes through the derivations in a clear and appealing way. Stewart's writing style is sophisticated, but at the same time respects what I was taught in law school about writing a brief: Tell them what you are going to say, say it, and then tell them what you said. Using this as guide, the direction and the subject become attractive. In particular, the very clear Freedericksz transition descriptions and the fairly rigorous descriptions of the asymmetric stress tensor and how it can finally be used to describe real situations is unique to Stewart.
