This paper presents results from experiments in which the timing of exhaust valve opening and closing was varied in two-stroke marine diesel engine during shop testing, and reveals the effect on performance and emission, as well as the corresponding concept analysis. A simulation model was then developed based on AVL BOOST and experimental results, its validity was confirmed by actual measurements. This simulation enables a more thorough investigation into engine performance features and the scavenging process. In particular it provides a detailed examination of how changes in EVO and EVC timing impact the scavenging process and ultimately engine performance.
