| Sociological studies of sport have, during the last two decades, established their subject matter as central to a wide range of social and cultural, disciplinary and interdisciplinary, concerns. While Bourdieu was, in the 1980s, able to refer to the analysis of sport as ‘doubly dominated’—in being marginal to sociology’s mainstream and resisted by its practitioners (Bourdieu, 1987)—the subsequent proliferation of debates and studies on the subject identified sporting activities and competitions as a useful and often particularly revealing medium through which to explore the conjunction of ‘public issues’ and ‘private troubles’ that have exercised the discipline since its inception (Mills, 2000 [1959]). |
