The characterization and interpretation of the fouling of the AEM membranes needs further data (e.g. Raman or IR molecular analysis) and re interpretation of the data as clear precipitation is observed in 2 of the cells used in this work but the authors do not acknowledge this and only list one as having precipitation of Cu oxy-hydroxides. The authors near the end of their discussion assume not only that the Cu is only in a hydroxide form based on elemental analysis which cannot distinguish between CuO and CuOH2 but this is not possible via elemental analysis only molecular analysis. The authors state that based on the SEM images, that used AEM’s a2 had no fouling or precipitation but a3 clearly did have precipitation. From the SEM images and data in Table 7 it is clear that although the AEM a2 cell does not have as much precipitation as the a3 cell, it does have some precipitation but is not as significant.
