Recent additions include Ron Levy Computational Biophysical Chemistry Ann Valentine Inorganic/Biological Vincent Voelz Physical/Biological/Computational William Wuest Organic/Medicinal/Biological One of our recent hires, Michael Klein, an expert in molecular simulations, was elected to the National Academy of Sciences. One of our most recent additions, John Perdew, is also our second member of the National Academy of Sciences and one of the world's most cited scientists, specifically in the field of density functional theory (DFT). Here at Temple, Perdew is the founding director of the Center for Materials Theory, spearheading collaborative research in materials science. Two of them, Sarah Wengryniuk and Graham Dobereiner will start in August 2014 https://chem.cst.temple.edu/news/index.html#welcome A third new faculty recruit, Katherine Willets who is an expert in plasmonics and surface Raman spectroscopy, will start in January 2015. Clearly, Temple is making a major investment in the Sciences and Chemistry in particular. Temple's Chemistry Department has seen dramatic growth in ultrafast laser science. Our vibrant photonics community consists of four groups (Borguet, Dai, Levis, Stanley) using ultrafast lasers and two theory groups (Matsika, Spano) that focus on light-matter interaction. Additionally, the department has world class research programs in the fields of organic, inorganic, and biological chemistry, with foci on drug development, bioinorganic, nanoscience and materials, and organometallic and organosilicon chemistry. Philadelphia, the 5th largest city in the US, is one of the most livable and inexpensive cities on the East coast. The Graduate Application Process is described at https://chem.cst.temple.edu/graduate/apply.html Admission to the Ph.D. program requires an undergraduate GPA of at least 3.25. (Waivers can be granted in some cases.) TOEFL scores need to be at least 575 paper-based, 230 computer-based, or 88 internet based. Students admitted to our Ph.D. program in Chemistry receive full financial support. They do not pay tuition. They receive a stipend ($25k/year for 2014-2015) and their health insurance is paid. We admit most students in the Fall and some in the Spring (January). Applications are reviewed on a continual basis, so you will be considered for Spring 2016 if your application is not complete for admission in Fall 2015. P.S.
