| Fig. 1(c) shows that the increase in the concentration of the cross-linking agent NMBA resulted in the initial increase, and then decrease of the swelling capacity of the resin. This result was observed because when the cross-linker concentration is too low, the cross-linking density of the resin would also be low, which causes the formation of a sparse three-dimensional network that facilitates water entry. Moreover, the adsorption ability decreased, and the solubility of the material increased on a macroscopic perspective, which led to a decrease in water absorbency. This decrease has direct effects on the hydrogel strength after swelling. The resin did not become an elastic gel but a colloid with low strength. The swelling ability of the resin was reduced. |
