had he been less combative是虚拟语气的倒装 可以还原为 if he had been less combative. for a lot longer为前面主句的时间状语 a lot 这里是副词 修饰longer if someone or something is a lot better, faster, easier etc, they are much better, faster etc for long 是一个比较固定搭配 for long = for a great amount of time 整个句子可以还原为 If he had been less combative ，he probably would have continued to strut his stuff for a lot longer 这样就成了一个标准的与过去事实相反的虚拟语气从句 |

2楼正解! 在虚拟条件句中，有时可将引导条件从句的连词if省略，但此时应用倒装句型，即将从句中的were, should, had 等提到句首。 例如： 1、If we had found him earlier we could have saved his life. →Had we found him earlier we could have saved his life.（如果我们能早点发现他，或许可以救了他的命） 2、If I were young again, I would cherish the time in my college school. →Were I young again, I would cherish the time in my college school. (如果能够回到年轻的时光，我会珍惜在大学的日子) 3、If it were necessary, I would go. →Should it be necessary,I would go. (假若有必要，我会去的) |
