Tata Steel Europe Port Talbot plant, situated in South Wales, produces about 4mt liquid steel annually, and the products are predominantly low carbon strips, high strength strips, tubes and tinplate. Approximately 50% of the steel is treated through a degasser route, while the rest goes through CASOB. As shown in Fig.1, the plant has 2 double strand casters and 1 splitmould twin strand caster. The plant operates with two vacuum degassers, named RH degasser and RD degasser. The RD is used as the primary degasser, while RH as secondary degasser. The average snorkel life is about 350 heats for RD and 320 heats for RH degasser. Lower sidewalls have a campaign life in line with the snorkel, while typically the hearth working lining will run for two campaigns. The lower average snorkel life in RH degasser is mainly due to the lower utilisation rate and higher treatment time.
