Over the last few years, Tata Steel UK Port Talbot has since embarked on a programme to improve the RH and RD degasser snorkel life through material selection, design optimisation and process control. The combined effort has resulted in steady improvement of the overall performance of the degassers up to 2008. The reduction in snorkel life from 2009 was primarily due to the low production, which resulted in a large variation in utilisation rate. One of the main factors limiting the snorkel life is the wear of the upper snorkel, particularly around the Ar tuyeres. In a few cases, the excessive wear occurred in the areas just above the lower row of Ar tuyeres at the early stage of the campaign, as shown in Fig.3 (a). |
