The AZT and AZTn samples (samples “1”) were sintered in air at 1650 °C with a holding time of 2 h.
    In order to determine suitable thermal conditions for the formation of aluminum titanate (samples “2”), the green bodies prepared from the Al2O3/TiO2 powder mixture were heat-treated in air at two different temperatures (1500 °C and 1650 °C) and holding times (2 h and 4 h). The crystalline phase content in the heat-treated samples was analyzed by X-ray diffraction. Based on the results, which will be presented in the “Results and Discussion” section, 1650 °C and 4 h holding time were chosen for the synthesis of Al2TiO5.
     The same temperature and holding time were used for sintering the spinel samples containing pre-synthesized Al2TiO5 and the pure spinel samples (samples “3”).
    For investigating their resistance to thermal shock, the sintered AZT, AZTn, and spinel samples were heated for 15 min at 950 °C, 1150 °C, or 1200 °C and then quenched by plunging in water which had a temperature of 25 °C. The mechanical strength of as-sintered samples and of samples after one and after five quenching cycles were measured by three-point bending tests (testing instrument TIRAtest 2420, Germany).
