RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
Table 2 presents different castables’ physical properties (permanent linear change - PLC, apparent porosity - AP, apparent density - AD and pore volume attained by SEM images). Both expansion (PLC) and porosity scaled with the MgO grain size increase (AM100 > AM45 > AM13), whereas the density decreased for the expansion free testing condition, after firing at 1500°C for 5 hours. The unfavorable association of such properties (large pores with high porosity) resulted in a deeper slag penetration (expansion free, 18.2 % of infiltration) as showed in Figure 3. This figure also highlights that the penetration index scaled with the expansion (AM13 < AM45 < AM100) for the expansion free firing condition, whereas the results were much closer when a constraining effect was considered. Table 2 - Physical properties (permanent linear expansion, apparent porosity, apparent density, pore volume) for castables with different expansion levels (AM13, AM45 and AM100), fired at 1500°C for 5 hours, in expansion free or under constraint conditions, and their percentage difference when comparing both situations.
