5. Conclusions
The fate of selenium in Boom Clay is strongly dependent on its chemical speciation. Se(+VI) is not easily reduced but migrates unretarded through the clay, at least, at short time scales. Electromigration allowed us to rapidly estimate the apparent diffusion coefficient of selenate in the Boom Clay using two independent approaches. The results given by both methods differ by about a factor three, so that we consider the range 1.7×10-11–6.3×10-11m2s-1 as confidence range for the apparent diffusion coefficient of selenate in Boom Clay. This range is not unreasonably large because we must keep in mind that each experiment is performed on a different Boom Clay sample, and thus, the natural variation of the host rock plays a nonnegligible role in the output of such experiments.
