[交流] Phd position available at UHV-SPM group, iNANO, Denmark

PhD position at iNANO Centre: Photocatalysis for Renewable Energy and Organic Synthesis

A 3-year PhD scholarship is available at the Interdisciplinary Nanoscience Centre (iNANO), Aarhus University. The centre hosts ~ 150 PhD students and ~ 70 researchers, working in different areas covering surface science, material science, organic chemistry, and modelling. The iNANO centre houses a modern cleanroom, and a number of highly specialised laboratories with unique world-class equipment for synthesis and characterisation of nanostructured materials. We also offer excellent working conditions and support collaborations with world leading groups.

Description of the project
Semiconductor photocatalysis is a process that accelerates photoreactions (i.e., H2 production, photosynthesis) using radical species that are generated on the surface of a photocatalyst. As a branch of heterogeneous catalysis, semiconductor based photocatalysis has received great attention in the past decades due to the energy and environmental crisis. However, the quantum efficiencies of photocatalytic reactions are generally very low due to the rapid recombination kinetics of the photogenerated radical species. Engineering the bandgap (Eg) of semiconductor photocatalysts to enable visible light photocatalysis is another grand challenge. Classic pristine TiO2 has a Eg of ~3.2 eV, which can only initiate photocatalytic reactions by absorption of UV light (λ < 380nm). That is to say, only ~ 4% of the solar spectrum can be utilised.

The project at iNANO is aiming at both fundamental and applied investigations of the following aspects: (a) Surface engineering of photocatalyst materials. Engineering the surface of the photocatalyst (i.e., promoters, defects) to modify the electronic properties and surface affinity of reactants thus improve the quantum efficiency and selectivity of the photocatalyst. (b) Photocatalyst materials with visible light responses. Exploring novel photocatalyst materials with narrow bandgaps that can absorb visible light for photocatalytic reactions. Metal sulfide and nitride materials with well-defined physical parameters will be investigated. (c) Mechanism understanding of specific photocatalytic reactions. Study mechanisms of specific photoreactions using photocatalysts with well-defined physical parameters. Several in-situ and ex-situ spectrometry techniques will be employed to probe the reaction kinetics.

The PhD project will be carried out at the iNANO PhotoCat Lab in collaboration with internal groups and several world-leading institutes. In-situ quadrupole mass spectrometry (QMS) coupled with in-situ UV-vis spectrometry are the main techniques that will be used for performance evaluations and mechanisms investigations. The candidate will also have access to a branch of state-of-the-art characterisation techniques either located at iNANO or collaborator’s institutes (i.e., XRD, HAADF-STEM, EPR, and UHPLC-ESI-QTOF-MS). Interplay with surface science techniques (UPS, XPS, AFM, and STM) within the SPM (Scanning Probe Microscope) group is also a surplus, where fundamental understanding of the semiconductor photocatalyst can be gained.

Requirements
We are looking for a creative and enthusiastic candidate who is capable of designing and conduct experiments at a high level of independency. You are expected to be collaborative as a team player and willing to initiate new collaborations.
The applicant should (almost) have a Master degree in Chemistry, Physics or Chemical Engineering, preferably with a solid background in surface science, inorganic chemistry, and/or catalysis. Experiences in material synthesis/preparation are required. Excellent in analytic methods and programming are surpluses.

What we offer
We offer a Danish PhD stipend for carrying out a challenging 3-year project. Due to the funding requirement, you will be working at iNANO for two years, while one year will be spent at an institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences close to Beijing. You will work with innovative analytic equipment and you will be part of a highly profiled multidisciplinary collaboration where expertise of a variety of disciplines is combined.

Interested? Please contact Ren Su (rensu@inano.au.dk), Nina Lock (nlock@chem.au.dk), Peter Thostrup (thostrup@inano.au.dk) or Prof. Flemming Besenbacher (fbe@inano.au.dk) for more information.
