【英语茶座01】搭配恰当是英文地道的前提——从“渗透”与infiltrate说起

昨天一整天都忙于本科毕业论文的答辩工作。很累，倒是对一篇本科论文的标题很感兴趣。汉语标题里含有“渗透文化知识”的字眼，英文标题里却相应地翻译成了“Infiltrating Cultural Knowledge”。看后，我大为惊奇：竟有这样的搭配。我遂发问，你知道infiltrate一词的含义吗？他解释道，是指导老师改的。 哈哈，这对师生全错啦。只要稍微抬手翻一下词典，就可探得infiltrate一词的究竟。查询dictionary.cambridge.org网站，即可得到如下解释： 1） to secretly become part of a group in order to get information or to influence the way that group thinks or behaves: A journalist managed to infiltrate the powerful drug cartel. 2）to move slowly into a substance, place, system or organization: At about this time the new ideas about 'corporate management' had begun to infiltrate (into) local government. 第一个义项显然是“使(思想、人员等)渗透”的意思，往往含有贬义，与中文中的“卧底”很像。第二个义项则是“使(液体等)透过,渗入”的意思，或者是“蔓延”之意。由此可见，“渗透文化知识”翻译为“infiltrating cultural knowledge”实在不妥。我们从中可以掂量搭配恰当的重要性和勤翻词典的必要性。 【思考题】  1.1 knowledge能跟learn这一动词搭配吗？若能，请从英文网站上给出实例。若不能，请列举可用的动词。 1.2 请寻找一部质量可靠的在线词典，查询permeate的含义，并注意permeate和infiltrate的异同。 [ Last edited by enineera on 2005-3-28 at 18:57 ] |
