have you heard self-discipline is limited?

The recent topic is about change. When it comes to the ways of change, the teacher presented a novel opinion, which was not for sure his own idea or others. It is self-discipline is limited. Here is a study. Randomly dividing people into two groups, they separately carried on this experiment with them. They asked the first group to wait outside the room where experiment was done with freshly baked chocolates out of oven, and told them "if you don't mind, please not touch those chocolates for they are prepared for the experiment". Surely, It was irresistible to the flowing attractive amour into your nose and needed a lot of discipline. After a certain period of time, they were then called into the room and went through the same test like the one outside the room. With the other group, the tempting food was replaced by beetroot. Then they performed this same experiment as the first one resisting delicious chocolates. Can you guess the result? It surprisingly turned out the first group ate more than the latter. Later on, with more and more similar research was done, scientists came to this conclusion with rigor. The meaning of understanding the result can help us to change. Sometimes, we realize something needed to be done to change and for example, plan to do physical exercise two or five times a week. At the very beginning, self-discipline forces us to take action, but with its limit, obviously, the action usually won't last long. Familiar with the situation? Very often all of us had similar experience of giving up quickly upon our new resolution. Research fellows suggest that maybe the effective way is to make our behavior into a ritual or habit like brushing teeth every morning until self-discipline is not play a part any more. It is when we are devoted to something habitually without mindfulness that we really bring about change and change efficiently. |
