A perfect alignment corresponds to an order parameter of 1, whereas a random orientation gives a value of 0. A typical liquid crystal has an order parameter in the range 0.3 to 0.8. The value generally decreases as the temperature is raised. In particular a sharp drop of the order parameter is observed when the system undergoes a phase transition. The order parameter can be measured experimentally in a number of ways, such as diamagnetism, birefringence, Raman scattering, NMR, and EPR.
