Microstructure has a direct impact on material behavior under test and real life conditions.  To improve material properties, metal parts, e.g. end mills, are often heat treated while being made.

柱状晶具有优良的抗蠕变和抗疲劳能力、卓越的电学和信号传输性能,同时具有抑制裂纹扩展等优点,因此研究柱状晶生长过程及其影响因素具有非常重要的科学意义和实际应用价值

Columnar crystals increase creep, fatigue, and thermal crack resistance, as well as electrical conductivity and signal transmission.  To the extent cutting tools already benefit from being coated with vapor-deposited TiCN [1], future research into columnar crystal cultivation holds even greater promise for electronics [2,3] and other industries.  For example, a patent [4] already exists for making columnar crystal scintillators by vapor deposition.

  (论文摘要)
A novel cultivation method is presented for growing columnar crystals whose promise of higher creep, fatigue, and thermal crack resistance have already by realized by cutting tool manufacturers [1].   Methods more efficient than vacuum induction [5] are applied to promote directional solidification processes [6] responsible for columnar crystal formation.
