Xia and co-workers reported synthesis of a Co3O4 monolayer hollow-sphere array obtained via a wellorganized and close-packed PS monolayer array (Fig. 1a and b). Also Co3O4 nanoflakes with a thickness of about 20 nm may fill the interstices between the hollow spheres and show mesoporous walls with finer pores in the size range of 2–5 nm (Fig. 1c and d). (Fig. 2a and b) show the low-magnification TEM and SEM images of the initial CoO hollow spheres and Co3O4 hollow derivatives, this clearly demonstrates the competitive transformation of CoO hollow spheres into Co3O4 ones. (1) preparation of hard templates with functionalized surfaces; (2) coating the templates with designed materials or decoration of inorganic shells; and (3) selective elimination of the templates to obtain hollow structures. In this section, we will mainly introduce several kinds of hard templates: colloidal polystyrene (PS) or carbon spheres (CCSs), silica, hollow spherical precursors, and bio-templates. |
