刚看到的 感兴趣的虫子快速申请！ PhD position in experimental atmospheric cloud physics research at ETH Zurich The Atmospheric Physics group in the Institute for Atmospheric and Climate Science (IACETH) at ETH Zurich has an opening for a PhD position with the topic: “How is precipitation initiated in orographic mixed-phase clouds?” Orographic precipitation is important for water resources as it determines the discharge in many rivers. Typically, precipitation forms in mixed-phase clouds (MPC), consisting of ice crystals and liquid droplets. Because of their complicated structure and dynamics, the level of scientific understanding of MPCs is low. To better understand and accurately represent MPCs in models, measurements over a wide range of particle sizes and at high spatial resolution are crucial. This project will involve in-situ measurements of the microphysical properties of orographic clouds in the Swiss Alps. The instrumental set-up will include a holographic imager HOLIMO II (Henneberger et al., 2013) which allows the imaging of cloud particles in-situ. Specifically in this project the objective is to establish a cloud measurement platform on a cable car, which will yield cost-efficient measurements of vertical profiles of MPCs in the Swiss Alps thus the ability to study the cloud properties. The qualifying candidate should have a MSc degree (or equivalent) in physics, atmospheric or environmental sciences. We are looking for applicants with a strong background in experimental work, preferentially with experience in field campaign measurements and/or instrument development.
