Research Associate Closing date : 09/01/2014 Reference : E&PS-03769 Faculty / Organisational unit : Engineering & Physical Sciences School / Directorate : School of Materials Division : - Employment type : Fixed Term Duration : From 1st January 2014 for 12 months Location : Sackville Street, Manchester Salary : £29,541 to £31,331 per annum (pay award pending) Hours per week : Full time Applications are invited for a 1 year post-doctoral position funded by the Engineering and Physical Science Research Council (EPSRC). The aim of the project is to develop and automate radiosynthetic methods for peptide labelling with the PET isotope 18F. The use of non-covalent self-assembly to construct materials has become a prominent strategy in material science offering practical routes for the construction of increasingly functional materials for a variety of applications. A variety of molecular building blocks can be used for this purpose; one such block that has attracted considerable attention in the last 20 years is de-novo designed peptides. In the past two decades scientists have investigated the possibility of exploiting the self-assembly properties of these short natural molecules to design novel materials. The aims of this project are to develop automated radiolabelling methods for the peptides, to image the distribution of the peptide by positron imaging tomography and by mass spectrometric methods. You should have, or be working towards, a PhD or equivalent in chemistry or a related subject with particular expertise in radiochemistry and mass spectrometry. Knowledge of the GE TracerLab radiosynthesis platform would also be advantageous. You will be part of a large research team and will be required to drive collaborations with scientists across the University and beyond in a number of biomedical fields for which these materials will be designed and therefore good interpersonal and leadership skills are required. Informal enquiries Informal enquiries can be made to Dr Alberto Saiani: Email: a.saiani@manchester.ac.uk Telephone: 0161 306 5981 The University of Manchester values a diverse workforce and welcomes applications from all sections of the community. |
