PhD/Postdoc Positions for Optical Imaging at the Medical University of Vienna

Job Description:

Both a PhD and a Postdoc positions are open now and are available immediately. The vacancies are offered by Prof. Wolfgang Drexler at the Center for Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering of the Medical University of Vienna. As an internationally recognized lab for pioneering work in optical coherence tomography (OCT), the Drexler Lab has been investigating dual modality imaging using both OCT and photoacoustics. The job will include but not be limited to the optimization of our current OCT/Photoacoustic tomography (PAT) system; assisting in building fast scanning, spectroscopic optical-resolution photoacoustic microscopy (OR-PAM) systems; implementing algorithms for image reconstruction, processing and rendering; performing small animal studies in collaboration with our biological and clinical collaborators, etc.

You will work closely with another PhD student in the Drexler Lab in the field of photoacoustics and other specialized personnel in the center are readily available to help you in programming, mechanical modeling and electronics. However, you will be assumed to be capable of solving problems fairly independently without detailed day to day guidance.

If you get accepted and join the Drexler Lab, you will have 25 days paid holiday and 14 months’ salary per year with health insurance. There is no tuition for PhD students if you can finish your study in 4 years. The Drexler Lab’s participation in both international and national projects such as FAMOS and NFN means that if productive, you will have plenty of opportunities to meet other prestigious researchers and industrial representatives in the field of optical imaging. You will also be entitled to present in international conferences once you have good results.

Application Requirement:

For the PhD position: A Master of Science Degree or equivalent is mandatory, preferably in the fields of electrical engineering, optical engineering, biomedical engineering or applied physics.

For the Postdoc position: A PhD Degree conferred in less than 3 years is mandatory. Experiences in optical imaging, biophotonics, system design and automation are preferred.

General requirements: college level knowledge in geometric optics, digital circuits, signal processing and mechanical modelling is mandatory with a high preference to knowledge of physiology and anatomy. Applicants with extensive LabVIEW, MATLAB and CAD programming skills will gain priority.

Language requirements: English is the official language for the PhD program and the working language in our center. Though not specifically required by the university, non-native English speakers are required to have a minimum TOEFL or IELTS score of 90 or 7, respectively.

Application Procedure:

Interested applicants please send a resume and a personal statement to Mengyang Liu at mengyang.liu@meduniwien.ac.at. Please provide the contact information of two referrers so we can ask them to provide reference letters for you. Upon receipt of your resume, personal statement and two reference letters, you may be interviewed. A final decision will be sent to you by email and if you accept our offer, official documents will be mailed to you for residence permit application.
