that of有两种用法： (1) that of 代替了前面的某个内容 The size of China is bigger than that of USA. (that of = the size of) (2) that of 指代“那一类” His manner was that of someone accustomed to mixing with nobles. (他的言行举止属于那种习惯于跟贵族打交道的人） 很明显，这里usually that of a metal属于第二种用法，指前面的中心原子（a central atom）通常是一种金属， 周围包围着一系列原子或原子团...... |
