Positron  is extremely sensitive for the detection of micro-defects. it is one of the advantages of the positron annihilation. The de Broglie wavelength of the heating positron is several angstroms, and it can be  imagined as a spherical wave packet with the diameter several times lattice constant. Its average diffusion length is 100-200 nm before annihilation. So, it must sweep  10E8 (cubic angstroms) in volume before annihilation, which may contain 107-108 of ion (atomic). If there is a space, the positron is likely to be caught.
