What are the differences between present professors and those before 1970s?
|

| In the May Day holiday I bought a book named "Scholars in my contemporaries" by Ji Xianlin (我们这一代读书人). It was soon possessed by my uncle, an aged editor, and read in advance. In exchange he present me another book, Fates of free intellectuals in China, one book concerns about the deeds and fates of learners, professors like Feng Youlan, Hu Shi, Wu Han, Qian Zhongshu and many other names I'm not so familiar before and in the "Great Cultural Revolution". I do not wanna talk about too much details in it. There is a view, "In those days the scholars or professors were cultivated or made manually, so valuable; in contrast, they are produced in batches nowadays, so the quality is decreased..." Do you agree with that? And what do you think are the differences between them, present professors and those before 1970s? |

No. 1, the old scholars can not use computer, I am sure of that, but most of the contemporary ones can. No. 2, the old ones must fly less than most of their contemporary counterparts. No. 3, so, how should we define the word scholar? Does it mean a person who studies and write words? If that is true, perhaps contemporary scholars study more subjects. Who are contemporary scholars in your opinion? Did any names appear in your heart? Yuan Longping, Rao Yi, Fang Zhouzi, are the names I can remember. |

you've raised an interesting topic here. As those scholars in the book was mainly the big names from humanities or social sciences, the comparison is better restricted within the same or related fields. People may also say that " In those days the graduates were cultivated or made manually, so valuable; in contrast, they are produced in batches nowadays, so the quality is decreased ...". Some people even argue that the bachelors today are only on the level of high school graduates 30 years ago. personally, i do not think scholars before 1970s had higher academic level, better academic training or greater academic achievements than those of today. One should not ignore the word " valuable". There were so few scholars that many of them could be "visible" or provided with favorable positions. take a look on today's university or institutions, scholars are facing much harder competition and often distracted from their own study. I would say, "less is more" happened in those days, and is replaced by "more is less" today. it not matters how qualified they are, it matters in which time they were living. |
