Abstract The high temperature deformation of nickel and three nickel-iron alloys has been studied between 0.6 and 0.9 Tm over a wide range of constant strain rates in torsion. It is established from metallographic and flow stress observations that dynamic recrystallization occurs at strains greater than a critical value and results in a recrystallized grain size which is determined entirely by the flow stress. The kinetics of dynamic recrystallization are discussed and shown to be in agreement with experimental observations. It is concluded that the activation energy for deformation is determined by recrystallization and that recrystallization is periodic at low stresses but becomes continuous with increasing stress. Résumé La déformation à haute température du nickel et de trois alliages nickel-fer a été étudiée entre 0,6 et 0,9 Tm dans un large domaine de vitesses de déformation en torsion. Les observations métallographiques et l'étude de la contrainte dans le domaine plastique montrent que la recristallisation dynamique se produit pour des déformations supérieures à une valeur critique et que la taille des grains recristallisés obtenue est entièrement déterminée par la contrainte. Les auteurs discutent la cinétque de recristallisation dynamique obtenue et montrent qu'elle est en accord avec les observations expérimentales. Ils concluent que l'énergie d'activation pour la déformation est déterminée par la recristallisation et que la recristallisation est périodique pour les faibles contraintes mais devient continue quand la contrainte augmente. Zusammenfassung Die Hochtemperaturverformung von Nickel und von drei Nickel-Eisen-Legierungen wurde zwischen 0,6 und 0,9 Tm in einem groβen Bereich konstanter Abgleitgeschwindigkeiten in Torsionsversuchen untersucht. Aus metallographischen Beobachtungen und Flieβspannungsmessungen wird gefunden, daβ dynamische Rekristallisation eintritt, wenn die Abgleitung einen kritischen Wert überschritten hat; die sich ergebende Gröβe der rekristallisierten Körner wird vollständig von der Flieβspannung bestimmt. Die Kinetik der dynamischen Rekristallisation wird diskutiert und es wird gezeigt, daβ sie mit experimentellen Beobachtungen übereinstimmt. Es wird der Schluβ gezogen, daβ die Aktivierungsenergie der Verformung durch die Rekristallisation bestimmt ist und daβ die Rekristallisation bei kleinen Spannungen periodisch ist, jedoch mit zunehmender Spannung kontinuierlich wird.
